ChromaDex® Evaluating pTeroPure® as a Potential Treatment for Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer (CDXC)
ChromaDex® Corporation (OTC: CDXC), an innovative natural products company providing proprietary, science-based solutions and ingredients to the dietary supplement, food and beverage, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries, is studying its pTeroPure® as a potential treatment for Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer (NMSC). Earlier this year, the University of California, Irvine granted ChromaDex® the exclusive rights to a joint patent application filed by ChromaDex and the University.
pTeroPure is CDXC’s ultra-pure formumation of pterostilbene, a compound found in blueberries and shown to have a number of health benefits.

NMSC refers to a group of skin cancers that affect the upper layers of skin. In the U.S., NMSC is the most common form of cancer, outnumbering all other cancers combined. A number of factors are responsible for the rising incidence of NMSC, including modern addiction to sun-bathing, rising elderly population and decreasing stratospheric ozone. It is estimated that, globally, a 10% drop in the stratospheric ozone will cause 300,000 additional NMSCs.
A common treatment for NMSCs is a simple operation, which is done under local anesthetic to cut out the cancer. Another treatment option is cryosurgery or freezing treatment with liquid nitrogen, which destroys cancer cells. Chemotherapy creams are also sometimes used to kill cancer cells. Radiotherapy is occasionally used as an alternative to surgery if the area covered by the cancer is larger, if the site is difficult to operate on, or if an operation cannot be done for any other reason.
However, the cost of treatment of NMSC is substantial. Existing treatments also cause frequent side-effects and have limited efficacy. The rising incidence of NMSC and need for prevention and alternative treatments make the NMSC market attractive.
ChromaDex’s pTeroPure may show promise for the regression of precancerous diseases such as actinic keratoses, which is the earliest identifiable lesions that can eventually develop into skin cancer, and other changes that are related with photodamage of the skin.
pTeroPure may also be used to suppress or prevent progression of the precancerous diseases to NMSC. The NMSC market is estimated to exceed $450 million; however, the market is significantly underserved at the moment. William Spengler, President of ChromaDex, said earlier this year that CDXC is uniquely positioned to enter a very large but underserved segment of the skincare market with its novel ingredient pTeroPure®.
